Pict-01 Lower Lake (Timber) dam
This picture taken around 7 AM on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 shows the Lower Lake dam still being overtopped but only by an inch of water. During the night, you can see by the guard rail on the left, the water was at the top of the guard rail. The dam was damaged but did not fail. It protected the properties downstream by storing about 3 feet of water (above the normal lake level) over its 17 acres or by about 50 acre feet of water. By the Lower Lake level being this high, the Upper Lake (Birchwood) Lake, even though the berm on the south side of it's dam was washed away, the Upper Lake level remained at its normal, pre flood, level because bulkheads on both sides of the berm did not fail. Birchwood Lakes did not pass any net water downstream but rather stored 50 acre feet of water in its lower lake. This extra water was discharged later in the day. |
